Crochet Granny Square Tote Bag

Hi friends,

This is a cute and easy way to make a lined Crochet Granny Square Tote Bag if you’re like me and sewing isn’t one of your talents. 😉

You’ll need a canvas tote bag. This is the one I used – it measures about 15 by 15 inches. I also found this one on Amazon. It measures 15 by 16 inches and comes in different colors, although you do have to buy at least 3 of them.

Any of your favorite worsted weight yarn (4 weight) will work great to make your tote bag. I used I Love This Yarn in Turquoise, Light Peach, Burnt Pumpkin, Ivory, and Peacock with a G/4mm crochet hook to stitch up my granny squares. If you need a refresher on how to crochet a basic granny square, this tutorial at Crochet 365 Knit Too is great.

I stitched up 18 granny squares. They each measure approximately 5 inches square. I joined 9 squares together using the simple method of single crochet in the back loop of each square. This method gives a nice ridge between each square.

Then I put the 2 sides together with wrong sides facing each other. Beginning in the top left corner, I joined the 2 side together in the same way, by single crochet in the back loops, along 3 sides up to the top right corner, but don’t fasten off yet. I continued around the opening at the top of the bag with 2 rounds of single crochet so it would reach to the top of the canvas bag. Depending on the measurements of your bag, you may need to add another round or 2.

I slipped the canvas tote into my crocheted bag and used my Surebonder Hot Glue Gun with Surebonder Fabric Glue Sticks to glue the crocheted bag to the canvas bag. I added a line of glue a few inches at a time until I adhered all the way around the top of the canvas bag. You could also hand sew the crocheted piece to the canvas bag if you want to.

I’m so happy with the way it turned out! The color combos are limited only by your imagination. 🙂 You can even make all of your squares in one color and join them with the same color or with a coordinating color. It’s really a fun project – and it can be a great stash buster, too!
