Rustic Wood Heart

I found this heart in the Dollar Spot at Target for $3. I wasn’t crazy about the way it was painted, but I loved the texture on it and thought that with a little paint it could be really cute.

I painted the heart with 2 coats of Americana Decor Chalky Finish Paint in Lace, letting it dry between coats. After the paint was dry, I used a stiff bristled brush to heavily dry brush Home Decor Chalk Paint in Maui Sand over the heart to give it a rustic look.

I’m really happy with the way it turned out! It will be great for Valentine’s Day and all year long.

Keep your eyes open as you’re out and about – you never know what you may find that you can alter to fit your decor. 🙂

Mini Crochet Valentine Hearts

Are you crafting for Valentine’s Day yet? These cute little crochet hearts work up in just a few minutes! You can find the free pattern here. It includes patterns for 3 sizes of hearts and a puffy heart. I’m making the small heart.

My finished heart measures about 1-3/4 inches wide by about 1-1/2 inches long. I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn in red with an H/5mm hook to crochet my hearts – the pattern calls for an E/3.5mm hook, but I wanted my hearts to be just a little larger. Any worsted weight yarn will work just fine.

As you can see, I’ve made a few of these cute mini hearts. ❤️😊

I found these fun candy cups at Hobby Lobby in the Christmas clearance section – perfect for Valentine’s Day. Look in the cake decorating aisle and I’m sure you can find other patterns and colors.

Just look how cute these little hearts are tied around a treat bag with a baker’s twine bow! Who wouldn’t love receiving this adorable Valentine? ❤️

You could also make a bunch of these hearts and string them on twine to make a garland. Or put a hair clip on the back for a sweet little girl. Make them in white or pink along with the red – the three colors together would look so cute as a garland!

Crochet Granny Stripe Baby Blanket

Every new little baby needs their own special blanket – at least that’s what I think!

I love the versatility of this Granny Stripe Pattern you can find here. You can make it in any colors you want with as many – or as few – color changes as you’d like.

I used Caron Simply Soft Yarn in Soft Blue, White, and Soft Gray Heather with an H/5mm hook to crochet my blanket. I had 2 skeins of each color and had a bit of the 2nd skein of each left.

Using this pattern, I started with a chain of 114. Each stripe of color in my blanket has 5 rows. I crocheted 5 rows of white, 5 rows of gray, and 5 rows of blue and then continued that pattern. I did 5 stripes of white, 4 stripes of gray, and 4 stripes of blue for a total of 65 rows. I started and ended the blanket with white.

For the border, I single crocheted evenly around the blanket with gray for the 1st round. The 2nd round is done by crocheting 3 double crochet stitches (shell) in the same stitch, skip 1 stitch, work one single crochet in next stitch, skip 1 stitch and work a shell in the next stitch. Just continue that pattern around the edge of the blanket. I hope that makes sense – it’s not part of the pattern, just a border I have used forever on my blankets. 🙂

The finished size of the blanket is about 34 by 30 inches once the border is added.

This blanket can be stitched in any size – just make sure your beginning chain is in multiples of 3. What a pretty way to keep those sweet babies snuggly and warm!

White Bean and Ham Soup

This is comfort food at its best – and it’s so simple to make! You just put everything in your slow cooker, turn it on low, and go on with your day.

There are lots of different ways to make this yummy and filling soup – here’s what I did.

White Bean and Ham Soup

  • Ham bone left from our Thanksgiving Honey-Baked ham – I kept in the freezer (or about 1 lb ham cut into chunks)
  • 1 lb dried Great Northern beans, rinsed and sorted
  • Carrots peeled and chopped into chunks – whatever amount you want – I chopped about 5 carrots
  • 1/2 to 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • Salt, pepper, parsley flakes, and dried oregano to taste

Put everything in your slow cooker and cook for 8 hours on low.

I didn’t even soak the Great Northern beans overnight. I rinsed and sorted them just before I put everything in the slow cooker! I also used a slow cooker liner to make cleanup easier. This is such a forgiving recipe when it comes to the amount of each ingredient – just fill your slow cooker about 3/4 of the way full and your soup will be wonderful!

Add some fresh, hot cornbread and you have a hearty meal that will warm you up on these cold winter days. 🙂

Remembering 2017

Hard to believe another year has flown by! This year was filled with love, laughter, joy, hard times, good times, creativity, travel, and blessings.

One of the things my husband and I love most is to travel. This year we were blessed with 2 amazing trips. In April, we visited our precious friends in Bellingham, Washington. The Pacific Northwest is beyond beautiful – pictures don’t begin to do justice to the amazing landscape! You can read more about our trip in this post.

We also took an amazing trip to Hawaii to celebrate our 35th anniversary – which is crazy!! Where has 35 years gone?!??! It was beyond incredible!! Time to explore and relax and just enjoy being together. Here are a few pictures from our wonderful adventure and you can read more about our time on The Big Island here and on Kauai in this post.

Photos from The Big Island…

And from Kauai…

In between these 2 fabulous trips we had a very difficult month. I became very ill. After 4 trips to the ER in a week, I was finally admitted to the hospital. The doctors were treating me for what they suspected to be Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I spent 8 days in the hospital on IV antibiotics and I can’t even remember how many times my blood was drawn. We never did get a definitive diagnosis – blood tests all came back negative. But I was one sick girl! I had some amazing nurses and the most wonderful doctor taking care of me and I am so thankful for them! They were some of the most caring and dedicated people I have ever met. I truly felt blessed that God put them in place to care for me. We also felt the love and support of so many wonderful friends – we don’t have any family close by and it was hard for them to be so far away. But God has blessed us with amazing people who are like family – they made sure my husband ate, sat with me so he could take a break and go home to shower, sent beautiful flowers, notes, and cards, and most importantly prayed for us through a really hard time!! I was pretty sick for about a month and when I finally made it back to church, our worship pastor welcomed me back and everyone applauded – what joy that brought to my heart to feel so loved!!

Most days of my 2017 were just like yours – filled with cooking, cleaning, laundry, errands, and some time to create the things I love making. In the midst of all those daily necessities, I hope you will take a moment to recognize the little joys sprinkled around.

For me it was the sweet 4 year old girl who gave me a big hug and said “I love you” just out of the blue.

And the cute little 3 year old boy who shouted “Merry Christmas, Miss Nita” across the church parking lot.

And Rocket, my friend’s sweet dog who always wants to snuggle with me.

And the family and friends who are always there.

And my husband in more ways than I can mention.

Actually those last 2 are really major joys in my life. 😊

Keep your eyes and heart open in 2018 and I’m pretty sure you will find you are surrounded by little joys. ❤️

Wishing you joy in 2018,

Anita

“Perfectly Chocolate” Chocolate Layer Cake

What could be better than Chocolate Layer Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting? Well I’m sure there’s something, but I can’t think of it right now! 😉

This is the Hershey’s Cocoa recipe for chocolate cake and I think it is one of the best. You can find the recipe here. There is also a recipe for chocolate frosting, but I didn’t use that. Instead I made my own simple chocolate buttercream frosting that I have been making for years. I’m not sure if I got the recipe from somewhere or if it’s something I learned from my Mom. I don’t have it written down anywhere – it’s just in my head. 😊 You’ll find the recipe for the frosting below.

Here’s the batter all mixed up and ready for the oven.

Fresh and hot from the oven…smells so good!!

To make the Yummy Chocolate Frosting, you’ll need

  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2/3 cup baking cocoa
  • 4 cups powdered sugar – you may need a little less or a little more to get the right texture
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup milk

Cream together the butter and vanilla in a large bowl. Add cocoa and mix well, adding a little milk as needed. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well and adding milk as needed so the frosting reaches a creamy, spreadable texture. Beat the frosting on high for about 15 seconds until it is nice and creamy. It will look like this…

After your cake has cooled, it is ready for the yummy frosting.

I promise you won’t be disappointed with this “Perfectly Chocolate” Chocolate Layer Cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting!

Enjoy!

Simple Thanks

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends!

Do you need a few notes to say thank you for the gifts you’ve received? This card comes together really quickly – I made several of these in just 10 minutes!

img_0039

The embossing folder for the frame is an older one from Stampin’ Up and the “thanks” stamp is one I’ve had for several years from Amuse Studio. Another option to replace the embossed frame would be an oval or scalloped oval punch or die. Of course, any “thanks” or “thank you” stamp that fits your frame will work.

To make the card, cut 3 different patterned papers into a banner shape. Layer onto a white card. Emboss frame on white card stock and trim close. Stamp “thanks” with red ink in the center of the frame. Attach to card with foam tape. Attach red flower to the frame and finish it off with a pearl in the center.

This is such an easy card to adapt to any situation – just change the colors and patterns for whatever you need!

I love the simplicity of this card – but it is sent with heartfelt thanks!
